September is Special in TCM and Here’s Why
This is a special month. School is in session, the weather (while still quite warm) is a bit cooler in the morning and the sun has started to descend a little earlier each evening.
It’s a transition month where summer is still hanging on but we get glimpses of Fall. It’s known as the fifth season in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and called “Late Summer.” It’s represented by the Earth element.
The Earth element represents both stability and transformation. Therefore, this month is an important time to incorporate balancing practices and actively nourish the body and the mind. Rest, digestive support and emotional balance are at the forefront in this fifth season.
Sluggish digestion (bloating, reduced appetite, water retention), feelings of worry (and overthinking in general), or physical feelings of heaviness in the head or body are signs that the Earth element is out of balance.
To support yourself in “Late Summer,” consider these practices:
• Nourish your digestive system with warm cooked foods — stews, soups & root vegetables.
• Balance your energy with acupuncture or massage. These self-care practices can help alleviate worry and relieve tension while also offering grounding support.
• Walks in nature, yoga and meditation can bring a wandering mind back into the present moment. Using weight training during this time can help one feel more physically stable, strong and balanced. As always, movement is medicine but proper movement in accordance with the season can reap extra rewards.
